ALL is revealed at Aldi. This is an artist’s impression of the new store the supermarket company wants to build in Newton Abbot.

Already a dozen letters of objection have been fired off to Teignbridge planners who will deal with the re-submitted major application under delegated powers.

Aldi say they want to open for business – at the entrance to Brunel Industrial Estate – as soon as they can.

The ‘back-to-the drawing-board’ store takes up 1,140 sq m, more than 500 sq m smaller than the previous design.

Just under 100 car parking spaces will be provided at the site which keeps the famous railway signal gantry.

Most of the objectors so far have concentrated on grumbles over traffic congestion and road safety issues. They also argue against the need for yet another supermarket, especially one at a location geared for industrial units.

One opponent dismissed the venture as ‘ridiculous’ while another claimed the development would worsen noise and light pollution locally.

A supporter reckoned the store would benefit workers on the industrial estate whose short lunch hours made it impossible for them to get into town for provisions.

Another insisted: ‘The sooner we have it the better.’
