Dawlish Waterfowl Wardens have announced the cygnet had been lost, possibly having been attacked by seagulls.

Intense weather conditions and predators have also led to the loss of 13 ducklings which hatched recently.

A spokesman for the wardens, who are part of Dawlish Town Council, said: ‘It is with a very heavy heart that we pass on the sad news that we lost all 13 of the ducklings this past weekend due to predators and intense weather conditions.

‘Last night we also lost one of the cygnets who was also attacked possibly by seagulls.

‘Unfortunately these were all natural acts and we are unable to completely stop them.

‘Our wardens do take the greatest care of our waterfowl, but when they are not available anything can happen.

‘If you do see anything unusual or dangerous please contact us, the RSPCA or even the police if warranted.

‘Thank you all for caring so much for our town and our feathered friends.’
