A POTENTIALLY devastating fire at Haldon Hill Forest Park was stopped in its tracks at the weekend, prompting rangers to issue a warning to visitors about the dangers of fire.

On Sunday afternoon, one of the park’s rangers noticed smoke coming from an area at the end of the Spicers Trail.

On investigation a campfire was discovered, still burning in a very dry area, with a high chance of spreading across the forest. Thankfully, the rapid response from the team meant that the crisis was averted and the fire was safely put out.

Forestry England stated: ‘Please remember that fires and BBQs are not permitted in our forests and woodlands.

‘If you see a fire, or spot any smoke please notify the rangers and the fire service. What 3 words can be a useful app to pinpoint the location.

‘If you have made a mistake and lit a fire or BBQ, please tell us. Our main concern is to get it put out as quickly as possible for the safety of our staff, visitors and wildlife.'
