Muse might be one of Teignmouth’s most famous musical exports and Luke Friend may have put the resort on the map when he appeared on TV’s X Factor, but the town’s harmonious heritage extends much further. Pianist and composer Franz Liszt played at the town’s Assembly Rooms back in 1840 and harpist and composer Elias Parish Alvars dedicated an operetta, ‘The Legend of Teignmouth’ to his birthplace.
A new exhibition at the Teign Heritage Centre will showcase the medley of talent associated with the seaside town this summer. Tunes on the Teign opens on July 6 and explores the history of musicians in Teignmouth as well as the wide variety of festivals the town has hosted through the years from the Shaldon Music Festival to the Shanty Music Festival.
Alongside the exhibition, the museum will host four free live music events that celebrate Teignmouth’s musical talent throughout July and August. Venus Blue, a female alternative punk group, and 3 Days of Wonder, who are known for performing 80s and 90s rock, will kick off with a gig on July 7. On July 19 the performance is from Mother’s Ruin, an electric folk band spanning traditional folk, folk rock, Americana and Cajun. On August 3 the set includes the Campion Folk Duo, who will be playing acoustic folk with a local theme, and One and All, a light-hearted shanty group. The final performance on August 18 features local shanty group, the Back Beach Boyz, and Swedish-Peruvian folk performer, Ulrika-Igraine. Tickets for all performances are available on Ticketsource.
