VOLUNTEERS from Teignmouth coastwatch team recently welcomed MP Anne Marie Morris to their base of operations.

The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) was set up in 1994 to restore a visual watch along the UK coastline after most small Coastguard stations were closed down.

MP Anne Marie Morris said: ‘It was excellent today as always to meet with Teignmouth’s fantastic Coastwatch team.

‘The National Coastwatch Institute and its dedicated volunteer watchkeepers use their expertise and equipment to help keep our seas safe year-round, and I am enormously grateful for their work.’

The first service watch for Teignmouth NCI took place on the August 1, 2004.

In those early days the Tower was manned only at weekends and during the school holidays.

In April 2005 the Lookout was officially opened by the then Mayor of Teignmouth, Cllr Mary Strudwick, who presented the station with a cheque for £1,000.

And it was in 2013 Teignmouth NCI obtained planning consent for a new lookout to replace their rather small cramped quarters, moving in to their new home in September of 2015.
