A monster pumpkin delivered to Steers greengrocers, Bovey Tracey, has amazed customers and staff.

So impressive is the vegetable that people are being offered the chance to guess its weight at 50p a go, all proceeds going to the charity of the winner's choice.

The pumpkin was donated to Steers by its main pumpkin supplier near Exeter.

'Whoever wins it will get a flipping great pumpkin. I will supply them with a recipe, I think,' said Paul Johnson, shop manager.

'Every year we sell 50, 60 pumpkins or more and I've never seen anything this big. It's about 3ft across, one person can carry it, just.

'Shoppers have been really impressed by the size.'

He added: 'Last year was not very good for pumpkins, they were just going rotten.

'This year is better as it has not been so damp.
