THIS huge conger eel, which weighed more than 50 kilos before being gutted, is on display at Jacksons Fishmongers in Queen Street, Newton Abbot. It took three staff to lift the monster, whichis more than 10 feet from head to tail, on to the slab at the front of the shop, where it was on display yesterday (THURSDAY) and will remain today (FRIDAY) before being processed into fillet steaks.Amazingly the conger, which touches the scales at 46 kilos gutted – more than 100 lbs – was caught on rod and line from the Dartmouth angling boat Deborah Jane. But the boat fishes commercially and if it had been a record catch it would not have counted. According to the British Conger Club the world record rod caught conger is 133 lbs 4oz, landed by Vic Evans from a wreck off Berry Head, Brixham, in June 1995.Jacksons managing director Matt Endacott bought the conger for £50 at the 7am fish auction at Brixham Harbour on Wednesday.'I have been here for 17 years and I am the third generation of the family run business, and this is the biggest fish I have seen. About 12 years ago we had a monster conger which was 42 kilos gutted and that caused plenty of interest,' said Mr Endacott.

What a catch! TJ300909-9185
