The body of Torbryan man Simon Jay (pictured), who went missing in December, was found by a dog walker on Sunday afternoon.
Following swaling on the moor, his remains were uncovered between Haytor and Saddle Tor and were discovered by the walker just after 3pm.
His identity was confirmed after a forensic post mortem was carried out on Monday.
There were no suspicious injuries, although the cause of death is as yet unknown.
Investigators are now supporting the collation of information for the coroner.
Det Insp Sam de Reya said: 'Can I take this opportunity to thank all members of the public who supported this investigation and also the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Group and the Search and Rescue Dog Association who were involved in numerous searches.
'Our thoughts go out to Simon's family and friends.'
Mr Jay, 42, left his home on December 12 without explanation.
Police officers carried out land and air searches for Mr Jay, including in areas around Berry Pomeroy Castle and the Dartington Estate.
