The iconic Ness headland at Shaldon will finally shine in all its glory this summer after Teignbridge District Council switched on the lights on Friday (June 20).
Shaldon Parish Council became aware that there was a problem with the lights last year when they offered to pay for them to be switched on over the Christmas period.
‘We still don’t know what the problem was,’ said Teignbridge and Shaldon Councillor Chris Clarance. ‘I have been constantly pestering Teignbridge to get these lights back on and met with utter silence,’ he added.
The lights, which were purchased just four years ago following a generous donation by Shaldon resident James Ashton, are maintained by Teignbridge District Council. They illuminate the Ness from around 7:30pm until 11:15pm between May and October.
‘These lights have historically been turned on from late May or June. We received a report one of the tripods was in poor condition and embarked on a remedial work requirement review. Once this was complete, the decision was taken to turn on them on,’ a spokesperson from Teignbridge District Council confirmed.
