A TEIGNBRIDGE library has celebrated the 200 year anniversary of the birth of the man who helped make it what it is today.

Philanthropist and journalist, John Passmore Edwards, was a major driving force behind Newton Abbot Library, funding the institution such that residents of Newton Abbot can continue to enjoy it to this day.

Housed within the Passmore Edwards Centre, which takes it name from the 18th century gentleman, Newton Abbot Library celebrated the special occasion last week.

'Passmore Edwards was known for his passion for education and he devoted his life to supporting causes that would benefit the wider community' a spokesman for Newton Abbot Library said.

'He funded numerous libraries, hospitals, and other public institutions including our own library in Newton Abbot.

'Let us take a moment to remember and celebrate John Passmore Edwards on this special day, and to honour his legacy of generosity and compassion' the institution added.
