SIX-YEAR-OLD Jonty Tupman was left devastated this week after his trials bike was stolen from his Newton Abbot home.
And his brothers, Matthew, 15, and Christopher, 18, also lost their bikes, which were locked in a bike rack in the yard of their home in Grafton Road. The bikes were stolen in the early hours of Sunday and it is believed a van stopped on the new road linking Wolborough Street and Highweek Street, the thieves climbing over a wall, then a fence, before escaping with the machines. It is probable they were disturbed because a bicycle was also removed from a neighbouring property but was left abandoned in the road. Two bikes were also taken from nearby Linden Terrace and a further two from Steppes Meadow. What is really heartbreaking for Jonty is that he was due to compete in a local competition on Sunday. He is currently lying third in the British Bike Trial Championship for six to 10-year-olds. His mum and dad, Denise and Phil, are putting up a reward if all three bikes are recovered and information given so that action can be taken against those responsible. 'The next national competition is at the end of this month and Jonty desperately wants his bike back,' said Mrs Tupman. The Monty Trials bike is rare, with only a dozen of them in the country, and this was the only one in Devon. It is silver and black and has 205PR on the frame. Less than 12 months old, it is worth around £500. Matthew's bike, a Carrera Fury, is red, silver and black, has 26in wheels and, being less than seven weeks old, is in mint condition. Christopher's bike has a white Claud Butler frame with a large Blue Scorpa sticker on it, with dark grey 26in wheels with black hubs, black marzochi forks with Dirt Jam written on the sides. It has a large dent on the down tube. Mrs Tupman said that when the new road was built in connection with the Asda development, the wall was taken down in front of their houses and they were promised that a similar height wall would be put up. 'The wall now is only a third as high. We have been here 18 years and until now have never had any problems. Now those going by can look straight into our yards, and within a few weeks of the road opening we have had this happen,' she said, adding that they would now have to put in security lights. Anyone who saw anybody acting suspiciously in the area on Saturday night, a vehicle parked on the link road or who has any information about those responsible for the theft, is asked to contact Newton Abbot police via the central switchboard number 08452 777444.
