FOR a ‘serious’ and ‘unprovoked racially aggravated’ offence, Teignmouth man Christopher John Deane has been jailed.
Deane, aged 39, of Fraser Drive, Teignmouth West, had pleaded not guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words intending to cause a woman harassment, alarm or distress and that the offence at Newton Abbot was racially aggravated on November 25, 2021
South and West Devon Magistrates' Court found him guilty of this and sent him to prison for 16 weeks and the court found it was racially aggravated and said the reason for the prison sentence was: ‘Offence so serious because sustained incident and serious distress or alarm caused to multiple persons present including children and was racially aggravated, because of an unprovoked attack of a serious nature.’
Deane must pay £500 compensation and £400 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Deane changed his plea to guilty at Newton Abbot of using threatening, abusive or insulting words intending to cause to the same woman harassment, alarm or distress on November 25, 2021 and was sent to prison for seven weeks to run concurrently with the previous sentence.
He changed his plea to guilty of using threatening, abusive or insulting words at Newton Abbot intending to cause another woman harassment, alarm or distress on the same day. He received a further seven week sentence to run concurrently and must pay her £500 compensation.
Deane also changed his plea to guilty of using threatening, abusive or insulting words intending to cause a third woman harassment, alarm or distress on the same day. He received a further seven week sentence to run concurrently and must pay her £500 compensation.
No separate penalty was imposed to a charge he admitted of causing a nuisance or disturbance to a National Health Service staff member working at Newton Abbot Hospital.
