One of Teignbridge’s youngest voters has turned out at a polling station in Teignmouth.
Roxanne Wilson from Teignmouth, who celebrated her 18th birthday yesterday (July 3), said she was ‘really excited’ about casting her first vote in a General Election.
She arrived at the polling station with her brother, Frank, 19, who was also voting in his first General Election, and mum, Jess.
Voter turnout among 18-24 year olds is generally lower than the national average with IPSOS surveys suggesting that turnout in this demographic was just 47% in the 2019 General Election. The national turnout figure for the 2019 General Election across the UK was 67.3% with the south west region recording the highest turnout at 72%
However, Roxanne remembers learning about the battle for women to vote in the UK when she was at school. ‘I want to show that the suffragettes didn’t fight for nothing,’ she said.
