Teignbridge has been home to many influential naval commanders. And an event in May will explore the achievements of five local mariners from the Stuart, Georgian and modern Navy eras.
The event at Bitton House in Teignmouth, on Saturday May 10, will be the third South West Maritime History Society (SWMHS) History Day to be held in Teignmouth.
Local experts will explore the life of Gilbert Clapp from Dawlish; the homes and gardens of Bishopsteignton’s three Admirals; and the impact of Dawlish resident Admiral Schank’s lifting keel. The more recent amphibious assault on the Falklands will also be described by Commodore Michael Clapp from Ipplepen. Art historian Chris Davies will also be on hand to provide insight into some of the famous Thomas Luny paintings in the Mayor’s Parlour.
