Town and parish councils across the county are being invited to a series of special highways meetings in Devon later this month.
Devon County Council is hosting its annual town and parish council highways conferences to provide an opportunity for town and parish councillors and clerks to discuss a variety of highway issues.
The meetings, which are ticket-only for town and parish councils, will be held at:
Buckfastleigh Town Hall on Wednesday, November 16;
Bishops Nympton Parish Hall on Thursday, November 17;
Hatherleigh Community Centre on Tuesday, November 22;
Kenn Centre on Wednesday, November 23.
The events will be a combination of open discussion sessions, based around key topics and presentations, delivered by Devon County Council highways’ staff.
It will cover subjects such as the county council’s winter service, drainage and general maintenance, parking and vehicle speeds, and community self-help schemes such as the snow warden and road warden schemes.
Devon Highways staff will also update those at the meetings on matters such as highways funding, the council’s safety inspection policy, and its review of the road network categories.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highway maintenance and flood prevention, said: ‘These annual town and parish council conferences in Devon aim to provide an understanding of the work involved with managing the largest highway network of any authority in the country and the largest stock of bridges in the UK.
‘It’s an opportunity for towns and parishes to find out more about the issues we deal with and how we maintain the quality of our service against the backdrop of on-going budget reductions.
‘It’s also a chance to discuss the important work towns and parishes are undertaking in their communities, through schemes such as the snow warden and P3 schemes, which support the county council’s work on the highway network.’
All of the meetings will run from 9.30am to 2.30pm.
