THE ORANGERY in Teignmouth is open again, writes Christina Siviter.

After working our socks off through the winter, the beds have a load more fresh soil.

It took 85 sacks of compost – peat free – to keep the plants in healthy growth.

Our advisor and Chairman of the Friends, Stewart Henchie, who used to be a manager at Kew Gardens, has given us the benefit of his knowledge.

He also brings a team of volunteers from the Dawlish Gardens Trust.

This happy band has worked wonders, and loves helping, and we are so grateful for their assistance.

When you visit us, you will see the spectacular results. We chose an orange variety of Angel’s Trumpets (Brugmansia) to go with the oranges and lemons and kumquats.

The fruit – and blooms of their hard work to make the Orangery a delightful place to visit.

There are bananas and tropical ferns, and Birds of Paradise (Strelitzia regina).

The walls are smothered in Passion Fruit and Morning Glory, and orchids spray down from hanging baskets.

All this takes some organising. We have a rota of watering duties, and take turns to sit in with the open afternoons, and answer any questions from the visitors.

The summer season runs from April to September; opening Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm until 4pm. Weddings in Bitton House next door can book to have their photos taken in the Orangery at other times.

We will be holding an Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 13, in Bitton House, from 10.30am.and there will be light refreshments of course!

We would welcome new members, and if any have special skills, you would be doubly welcome.

At present, we need a membership secretary; Sue Maberley will collect and pass on inquiries for the time being; her contact is  07713162631.

The Orangery lies in the grounds of Bitton House, Teignmouth.
