THE Gresham House Inn opened its doors on Monday morning to host a public screening of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Before the funeral, the pub stated: ‘We will not be a pub on Monday, we will be a hub, a part of Great Britain. Free tea and coffee plus cake all day, the procession and service will be on our big screen, you can even raise a glass of her favourite tipple, on the house. Everyone is welcome. Our doors will be open for all to celebrate the Queen’s life at the Gresham House Inn.’
Pub owner Kate Henley made sure that everyone was welcome to come for the screening.
‘I wanted to provide an informal setting for those who aren’t necessarily religious to come together at this time. A lot of people can feel quite alone on days like today and we didn’t want to see that. Having somewhere that they can come and be with others is really important.’
The pub provided a variety of food and refreshments for the occasion, including tiffin cake – allegedly the Queen’s favourite.
Kate said: ‘We must remember all that she’s done for the country, but also that she’s someone’s mum and someone’s gran.’
Dawlish local Sarah Sykes felt similarly: ‘I think it’s impacted everyone more than we thought. She’s seen the country through so much change, so today feels like the end of an era.’
