RICHARD BERRY Sunnyville, Stapledon Lane, Asburton.
Richard is an artist whose watercolours capture the delicacy of light when it is reflected by water, rock and sky. His landscapes explore the shade and rich verdure, which signal the well-loved moors and shores of Devon. Richard has been teaching himself to paint for 20 years and has exhibited both in Devon and in Brittany. In recent years he has been working full time at his studio in the ancient town of Ashburton and has introduced oils and mixed media into his repertoire. Jill Farrow and Michael Brett Farrow 1 Summerland Avenue, Dawlish.
Jill has been a professional illustrator and artist-in-residence for many years. She has exhibited widely in London, the Midlands and the West Country. Jill specialises in painting and drawing the sea and shore, with a particular interest in the incoming and outgoing tide. Her images are made from life, using acrylic, watercolour, plaster of Paris and beach sand. Working in the open-air, in this way, gives her paintings immediacy, and liveliness and they contain the essence of the ever-changing nature of the surface of the sea. The horizon line is a preoccupation with her, and she feels that its inevitable inclusion in most of her work contributes to the notion of infinity and the relentless nature of the sea. Her earlier subjects have ranged from architectural portraits, botanical drawings and engineering book illustration and she has, additionally, produced several large-scale murals for public buildings. She will be showing a collection of paintings and drawings as part of Nine Days of Art in her Dawlish home. She also promises home-made cake. Michael Brett Farrow is a professional illustrator who likes to work in monochrome using either graphite or ink and enjoys the challenge of making pictures work in tone or line. His drawings are very strong, with a major graphic element and figurative content. He chooses popular subjects such as boats people and wildlife, especially birds, and is every day influenced by the Devon countryside and coast. This subject matter is aimed at a wide audience. Michael has always drawn, since he could first hold a pencil, and it is his favourite pastime. He always carries pencil and paper with him, and he draws every day, filling sketch-books with lively pencil drawings. In his earlier career, Michael worked as a designer and illustrator for several large multi-national corporations. He always enjoyed and specialised in illustration for education and training publishing, and has used his work to help people learn, either through publishing or adult education. He has had a one-man-show in the gallery space of Teignmouth library and has been an exhibitor in the South West Academy of Fine Art summer exhibition. As part of Nine Days of Art he will be showing lots of drawings and sketches and will have his sketch books on show in his studio in Dawlish.
