FIVE cars were burning when Newton Abbot Firefighters reached this site just off Queen Street.

They have just released this pictures from the scene early yesterday morning (Friday) on their Facebook page.

They report: ‘At around 5.45 one appliance from Newton Abbot fire station was mobilised to reports of a car fire just off Queen street in the centre of Newton Abbot.

‘Upon our arrival crews discovered multiple vehicles alight with smoke and flames issuing from five private use cars and vans. Flames had also started to spread to the fascia on the building adjacent to the vehicles.

‘Crews quickly got to work and the IC (Incident Commander) committed two firefighters wearing BA (Breathing Apparatus) to extinguish the vehicles. These firefighters utilised a hose reel jet as well as a 45mm attack jet to tackle the fire. They also utilised a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera) to monitor temperatures.

‘Due to multiple 999 calls fire control made the decision to mobilise our second appliance for assistance.

‘Crews used a nearby hydrant to ensure we had a steady flow of water throughout the incident.

‘The firefighting team also had to use a variety of small tools, as well as our battery operated spreaders.

‘This is so they could gain access to the engine and boot compartments of some of the vehicles in order to check for fire spread.

‘A cause for the fire is unknown at this time, however our fire investigation officers are working closely with the police to establish a cause.’
