FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot dealt with a smoking light fitting at Kingsteigntpon Veterinary Practice this morning, Tuesday.

At around 8.20am, both appliances from Newton Abbot fire station, alongside one appliance from Torquay and their ALP (Aerial Ladder Platform), were mobilised to reports of the building fire in the Kingsteignton area.

On arrival, the IC (Incident Commander) was met by the responsible person from #KingsteigntonVeterinaryPractice, who stated that a light fitting was malfunctioning and producing smoke.

On their Facebook page the firefighters said: ‘Due to the build-up of smoke in the treatment rooms, two firefighters were committed into the building wearing BA (Breathing Apparatus).

‘They also took with them a hose reel jet to extinguish any possible fire and a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera) to monitor temperatures.

‘While this was being carried out, crews outside were setting up a 51mm safety jet. The purpose of this is so that we can immediately increase our firefighting capability should an incident develop.

‘The electrics to the lighting circuits were quickly isolated to prevent the incident from escalating.

‘Crews inside found the offending light unit and were able to open up multiple windows to ventilate the surgery of smoke.

‘Once clear, other crew members entered the building to remove the light fitting. The fixtures and fittings to the light were registering at 95 degrees on our TIC, so the decision was made to remove the whole unit from the building.

‘Before leaving the scene, the crew took the opportunity to talk to local businesses in the area. This is a vital part of our role and is done to promote fire safety.

‘It is also a good opportunity to discuss how to make premises safer for both staff and customers alike.’
