WILDLIFE Alert! With no rain of any real help for months and drought conditions in many parts of the country, we need to see what we can do for the wildlife, as they don’t even have dwindling water reservoirs to get them through this dry time.
Here are a few little things you can do:
Put out one or two low rimed containers, like solid flowerpot bases, which are no more than about 30 mm to 40 mm high and fill them with clean water.
Change the water every day to keep fresh.
Put them in a place where they are not too exposed so that they do not feel threatened by crows and hawks. Or on a known run.
It’s not just birds who will appreciate the water, but hedgehogs and rabbits. These animals are finding it hard to find food that have a lot of water in them, let alone free standing water.
If you haven’t got a hedgehog small hole in your fence, or any other way of getting into your garden, it may be a good time to think about doing this (now on most new housing developments).
Do let the neighbours know what you are doing and only do this on the fence you own.
You will need to tell your neighbour and especially if they have a dog or cat.
Unless it is a big dog that could not get through, this may not be a good idea for you or them.
There are many pet shops that sell food especially for hedgehogs and rabbits, so worth asking them.
Also worth remembering, if you have a dog or cat yourselves, to check if any animals are drinking before you let them out.
Hopefully, if you sneak out early morning or evening time, you may see a hedgehog or a smart little bunny having a drink and possible a bird or two.
This water reservoir really could be a life saver for the struggling wildlife.
