Nothing - not even the storm clouds over Dartmoor - would deter the music lovers of Dawlish from coming to St. Gregory’s Church to hear Dawlish Choral Society’s performance of English Music, writes Christina Siviter.

The main offerings were by Purcell and Handel, with similar works of the period, for choir, soloists and instrumentalists, led by Adrian Janssen. Some were familiar for the festive season, others were surprises - joyful, solemn, melodious and delightful. Congratulations to the director, Nicholas Gardiner, for such a stimulating and thoughtful programme.

We began with the much-loved Rondeau from Abdelazer; there followed the heart-rending “Flow My Tears” by Dowland, and Purcell’s “Fairest Isle”, sung by Ann Draisey. The stirring March from Purcell’s Funeral Sentences, led onto his Dido & Aeneas”.

The beautiful pathos of Dido and her Lady in Waiting, Belinda, were sung by Helen Haviland and Anna Townhill, and followed by Ian Spackman’s enthusiastic delivery of the Sailors’ Song.

After the welcome tea and biscuits by the Rowcroft Hospice, we were treated to Claude Lamon in the Trumpet Voluntary by Jeremiah Clarke. The choir followed with one of Handel’s Coronation Anthems - “Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened”.

A long passage from the Messiah, “But Who May Abide?” sung by Helen Haviland, gave pause for pious reflection, with Luke Tayler’s oboe evoking the sound of the period.

The guest soprano, Anna Townhill, gave a tender rendition of “How Beautiful Are The Feet”, and the string instruments played Handel’s Pastoral Symphony. Then the programme came to a resounding conclusion from the choir with another Coronation Anthem, “The King Shall Rejoice”. A memorable uplifting evening.
