Teignmouth Airshow volunteer committee have been successful in their bid to have the RAF Red Arrows Display this July.
Following the success of Teignmouth Airshow 2022 the volunteer committee have been working on plans for this year’s event.
They are pleased to announce they will be supported on Saturday, July 1, by RAF aircraft display teams including the RAF Red Arrows, Typhoon and Lancaster, who will be joined by civilian aircraft displays to create an afternoon of entertainment along Teignmouth Seafront.
Teignmouth Airshow attracts in the region of 30,000 spectators, taking place over the first weekend in July with live music, aircraft displays and a classic car rally. The event is the largest free event in Teignbridge.
Volunteer chairman, Dave Matthews, expressed his delight that Teignmouth had once again been chosen as a display venue for the RAF Red Arrows: ‘Watching the Red Arrows display along Teignmouth Seafront last year was a surreal moment, I’m over the moon that we have been successful in our bid.’
The Lancaster and Typhoon will also be looking to make a return visit, the Typhoon took part in the inaugural Teignmouth Airshow back in 2019 and the Lancaster made its debut at Teignmouth Airshow in 2022.
Teignmouth Airshow is unique in that it is the only UK Airshow which is organised by a team of volunteers and funded exclusively through supporters’ donations and sponsorship from local businesses.
The event is funded by the people, for the people, and is a display of what can be achieved when the local community work together.
Amy Furlong, volunteer events director, explained how ‘without the support of our generous sponsors and supporters the event would not be financially viable.
‘The support the wider community shows us is unbelievable and motivates the volunteer committee to make sure the event is as great as it can be.’
This year Teignmouth Airshow has been sponsored by PES Plant Sales, TMS Maritime, Tozers Solicitors, Comer Carpets, Devon Accounting Solutions and Bunker Media.
Putting on an Airshow is no easy task, the event costs in the region of £90,000 to host, with The Red Arrows alone costing approximately £15,000, this is without the infrastructure costs holding a large-scale event brings.
Volunteer finance director, David Cook, highlights that there are ‘additional costs for toilets, security, crowd safety, PA systems, staging, insurance, first aid, waste removal and flight director fees, all of which must be factored in.
‘We work to extremely tight budgets and as a committee have tough decisions to make.’
David further explained that at this point in the planning ‘the committee are essentially taking a gamble, we know our aircraft costs and can add this to our infrastructure costs, however, at this current time we are still short of the overall target needed so the committee are working hard to secure additional event sponsorship and funding.’
Volunteer vice chairman, Robert Phipps said that there will be a ‘push for funding’ at the Family Fun Fundraising Weekend featuring the popular music event Decades on The Den.
The event will be taking place between April 28 to 30.
Full event details can be found on the Teignmouth Airshow website and Facebook Page.
Rob explained how ‘The Committee are hoping to raise funds at this event through bucket collection donations, income from their marquee bar, raffle ticket sales and the pitch fees from the traders and caterers’.
