WHAT is life really about, what happens when we leave this earth and what the hell is granita menthe?
These are the just some of the questions asked in a new comedic solo show that opens at Theatre Royal Plymouth next month.
Beyond Face is delighted to be working with TRP and imPOSSIBLE Producing on its latest production, In Search of Goldoni, written and performed by Saikat Ahmed and directed by Alix Harris.
The production will embark on a tour of the Westcountry this spring, including TRP, Bristol Old Vic, Sterts, The Poly and other venues.
The one-person comedic play follows Saikat on a family trip to Venice savouring Italian delicacies while simultaneously asking soul-searching questions like what life is really about.
Saikat is busy dragging his family around beautiful Venice, eating every flavour of gelato, serenading gondoliers, and obsessively thinking about a bloke called Carlo Goldoni, some Venetian twins and the death of his dad.
Come with Saikat as he takes us through the streets of Venice to the hospital wards of Romford and into the inner workings of his brain as he desperately searches for shade from the storm in his mind.
Founded in 2015, Beyond Face is a South West-based theatre company that supports local global majority writers and theatre makers to develop their craft and share their work with live audiences.
“I am really excited to be working on this beautiful script. Saikat is an incredible artist and I am thrilled that In Search of Goldoni is our next production,” said artistic director and CEO Alix Harris.
“Beyond Face champions new writing and supporting South West based artists and this is a perfect match of both. This tour will showcase our productions nationally. We are looking forward to meeting new audiences, venues and promoting the work being made in the region.”
TRP executive director for producing and programming Liz King added: “TRP has a strong history of working with Beyond Face and we are excited to be working with them again on this new production.
“Beyond Face, Impossible Producing and Theatre Royal Plymouth working in partnership to bring this new writing to regional audiences feels like a great partnership. Saikat and Alix are extremely talented artists, and we can’t wait to work alongside them to bring this show to life.”
Last year, TRP and South West-based theatre makers imPOSSIBLE Producing co-produced Tom Fletcher’s The Creakers which premiered in Plymouth before a run in the West End over the Christmas period.
imPOSSIBLE Producing Creative Directors, Gabby Vautier and Charlie Bunker said: “We are delighted to be producing Beyond Face’s production of In Search of Goldoni. As fans of Beyond Face’s work and values and long-term collaborators and friends, we are excited to be part of championing work made here in the South West on national stages."
In Search of Goldoni will begin its tour on May 1 before playing at TRP’s The Drum between May 7 and 10. For further ticket information, visit https://theatreroyal.com/whats-on/goldoni/.
