Staff and pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Buckfast, were thrilled to find out that they had won an award, following their entry in the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Our Outdoors competition 2016.

There were three categories in the competition, Most creative and distinctive planted outdoor space; Most improved and innovative outdoor location, and Our outdoors as a special and sustainable place in the community.

St Mary’s was presented with an award for Most improved and innovative outdoor location as recognition for the work carried out by pupils in their school woodland area.

Improvements to the area included the addition of a mud kitchen, wildlife habitats and a fire pit – all ideas generated by the pupils who also helped to design and build their chosen woodland features.

Judges came to school to present the award, which was received by some of the School Prefects and Mrs Alison Gagg from Buckfast Abbey Education Centre, who helped to support the school with this project.
