It seems as if there hasn’t been a day without rain for months. Maybe it just feels that way. For Teignmouthians the daily showers and downpours have put a damper on going out or shopping, but for farmers at the Teignmouth Farmers’ Market is it affecting their businesses.
Ask Stanbury Game how the rain has affected getting out to find the game, or Beardon Farm as to how their cattle are holding up. Have Shillingford Organic or Shute Fruit got their potatoes planted yet? And are the elderflowers ready for picking yet?
For the bakers such as Red Earth or Pat a Cake, brewers like Huxbear and fermenters like Tip Top Tempeh or Black Rabbit Cider, the weather may affect their products, too.
Despite this, the mood of the market will not suffer. For one thing farmers have is resilience. If they don’t like this weather, all they have to do is wait five minutes for it to change.
The wits have got it wrong for once: it isn’t just death and taxes we can be certain of, but also plenty of weather coming our way.
Teignmouth Farmers’ Market is in the Triangle, Teignmouth Town centre on Saturday, April 27 and every last Saturday of the month between 10 am and 2 pm. Whatever the weather whether we like it or not (Except in windy gales when the stalls could blow over) For more information see www.facebook.com/TeignmouthFM
