TEIGNBRIDGE District Council intends to re-develop the Sherborne House car park site on Kingsteington Road, Newton Abbot: a public consultation for which takes place from 4pm to 7pm on September 14.
A development of 22 ‘truly’ affordable homes is proposed, which are to be evenly split between one and two bed apartments, including two wheelchair accessible homes.
These will be constructed to the highest quality and environmental standards to greatly reduce energy costs and carbon emissions and tackle predicted climate change whilst creating attractive healthy homes.
The design brief sought to transform an existing brownfield site and create exemplar, sustainable, residential development in a town centre setting within walking distance of local amenities and public transport; to provide high quality, lasting architecture and urban design that is sympathetic to its setting and acknowledges the wider neighbourhood context of Newton Abbot’s town centre and enable residents to make low carbon transport choices.
The key drivers for the project included: building with nature by ‘greening’ a Brownfield site with enhanced landscape and biodiverse habitats; setting a new benchmark for quality residential development in Newton Abbot, with a respectful positive impact on the wider neighbourhood; offering flexible apartments offering living for all ages with minimal heating costs; building to Passivhaus standard offering residents the opportunity for comfortable, low environmental impact living and, finally, distinctive design taking its cues from it’s Town centre context.
