FRESH plans to save the Alexandra Theatre and transform it into a ‘cultural jewel’ have been welcomed by Newton Abbot Town Council.
Supporters of the popular Victorian amenity have argued that alternative proposals by Teignbridge District Council to merge a reduced ‘pop-up’ performance space with an enhanced indoor market would effectively end 140 years of live theatre.
Now The Alexandra Theatre Newton Abbot Charitable Community Benefit Society has tabled what it claims is a design that would deliver an improved market hall while also retaining a stage, orchestra pit, stage, fly tower and changing rooms.
In its application, Keith Lodwick, a former curator of Theatre and Screen Arts at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, said: ‘There is an opportunity to reposition the Alexandra Theatre as a cultural and creative hub in the centre of Newton Abbot.
‘The (former) proposed (Teignbridge) Council plans to redevelop the site and demolish the interior would rob the community of this unique venue.’
The district council’s proposals have since been amended to drop changes to the theatre.
‘The Alexandra has been entertaining audiences with live performance or moving images since its opening in 1883.
‘If the proposed [Society] plans are implemented, the Alexandra Theatre could become the cultural jewel of Newton Abbot, positioned alongside the museum, library, and performance space.’
The society’s proposal includes a new entrance atrium providing a link to the market hall, bar, café and ticket office. It also shows the possibility for a first-floor eatery and food hall within the market hall.
Up to 265 seats would be available, reduced to 240 for larger dance performances, orchestras and other community uses.
On Tuesday, January 10, Newton Abbot Town Council’s Planning Committee voted to support the application.
Cllr Alex Hall said: ‘This plan respects the heritage of the building and it will be a brilliant source of more night life for the town.’
Chair Cllr Ann Jones said: ‘I think it would be absolutely fantastic.’
The Town Council’s view will be passed to Teignbridge District Council whose Planning Committee will take the final decision.
