A RUNNER gave up his race to help a fellow competitor injured in a fall at Haytor Rocks over the weekend.

Paul Rutherford, from the Devon Orienteering Club, surrendered his ambitions for victory to stay with the casualty, a runner in his 50s from the rival Quantocks club.

Both were among 300 people from the south west taking part in the Compass Sport Cup and Trophy Event across Dartmoor on Sunday.

The accident happened just before noon when the luckless athlete tripped and fell as he made his way around Haytor.
