Newton Abbot Bridge Club is opening its doors to encourage new players to put their cards on the table and have a go at the game.

The club is offering a free taster session on Friday September 13 as part of a national festival organised by the English Bridge Union (EBU).

The EBU hopes it’s ‘Bridge – it’s a big deal’ campaign will improve awareness of the game while raising £60,000 for Cancer Research UK. ‘The Festival of Bridge is a superb opportunity to showcase our wonderful game to the many who have never played and to reignite the enthusiasm amongst those who have played but not in the last decade or so,’ said EBU chair Adrian Darnell.

At the Newton Abbot taster event, potential bridge players will be able to meet club members, play a simplified form of bridge and enjoy light refreshments.

Those who are already familiar with the game will be able to find out more about the club’s classes and tournaments.

‘It’s a great mental workout,’ explained Sarah Weeks from Newton Abbot Bridge Club. ‘Bridge is a bit like chess: you can learn the moves very quickly but it can take a lifetime to get really good,’ she added.

The event takes place at the Newton Abbot Recreational Trust between 1pm and 7pm. There will also be a raffle to raise money for Cancer Research UK with prizes donated by local businesses.
