A VOLUNTEER organisation and charity providing support for children and young adults with conditions such as autism and Apergers was well represented at King’s Teignton Ram Fair.

Going by the name ‘Asperations’, representatives of South Devon Aspergers Group made the most of their presence at the fair, raising just under £400.

Asperations’ stall was, first and foremost, a means of raising the vital funds necessary to enable the group to do what they do, but it was also a prime opportunity to get their name out there.

Group fundraiser Amy Jackson was a driving force in getting the charity represented at the fair.

‘I started coming to Asperations around four years ago after my daughter was diagnosed with austism and sensory processing disorder,’Amy said.

‘It has been a lifeline, not only for me but for my daughter too.

‘I wanted to give something back, which is why I became fundraiser for the group,

‘I love fundraising for Asperations it gives me confidence in speaking to new people, as being a parent of a special needs child can become very lonely’ she added.

South Devon Aspergers Group was formed in 2003 to provide a missing link for parents of children suffering from ADHD, Aspergers and autism.

The group are a voluntary, self-help organisation providing help and support for children and young adults between the ages of five and 18 and their families in Teignbridge, South Hams and Torbay.

Charity chairman, Claire Pitkin, said: ‘I started coming to Asperations when my daighter was seven.

‘At the time the group was a life line for me and both my daughters - I finally felt like we weren’t being judged because my daughter was “different”.

‘Asperations became part of my family’s routine, as my daughter got older, I used the knowledge I had gained from her diagnosis, schooling and resbite to help people new to the group.

The Asperations group meets every Tuesday from 4.30pm to 6.45pm at Kingsteignton Youth Centre.

Vice-chairman Suzie Orchard, said: ‘Asperations has made us feel like we fit in with like minded families, who have now become amazing friends.
