TREES that provide a ‘beautiful white blossom’ will be planted along Queen Street ready for springtime as the final phase of the controversial enhancement scheme draws to an end.

Local landscaping firm, Teign Trees, are to install seven large tree planters along the Newton Abbot road, each of which will contain a Juneberry tree.

‘Juneberry trees are small in size but provide beautiful white blossom in the spring followed by berries, making them visual appealing as well as producing nectar for pollinating insects and berries for birds to enjoy’ Teignbridge District Council (TDC) says in its latest residents’ newsletter.

The seven Amelanchier arborea will be joined by a range of flowering plants in two smaller planters.

Three new public benches will also be installed.

A new zebra-crossing near the town’s War Memorial has been delayed due to Wales and West Utilities’ gas works.

The installation of street furniture and greening marks the final phase of the controversial scheme to enhance Queen Street.

TDC have been working in partnership with Devon County Council, WSP and Cormac to deliver the scheme, which proved controversial from the outset.
