ASHBURTON local Jacqueline Howis braved the shave this week, to raise an astounding £1441 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Despite the cold weather, she’s loving every moment. ‘I’m cold and shivery but very proud,’ said Jacquelin. ‘I just want to totally embrace it because I love it, but it’s just so cold outside! The weather wasn’t with me, but I made the decision and I stuck to it.’

Jacqueline, 64, moved to Ashburton from Buckfastleigh when she was 12. Working in care for most of her life, Jacqueline has always seen both the devastation of cancer and the significance of Macmillan’s work, first-hand.

‘Macmillan was a huge thing when I was in social care. They’d come in and help with the end of people’s lives so I have huge respect for them.

‘At the end of someone’s life, they need someone with them 24/7. When you’re on a shift with 24 other people you can’t always give that, but Macmillan was always there, ready to support, so they’re absolutely amazing.

‘It’s less about cancer research and more about the care that they give that really impresses me. They’re prepared to support families in all aspects of the illness, a fantastic cause.’

‘I also lost three members of my family to cancer, so Macmillan has helped me and my family personally as well. Since I lost my sister, four years ago I wanted to do something ever since. Because I’d always been aware of Brave the Shave due to my contact with them, it seemed like a good way to show my gratitude.’

Jacqueline had been growing her hair since lockdown and seized the opportunity to make the change. In the process, she raised over £1400, through both the shave and a draw of prizes from local businesses.

Jacqueline was particularly grateful to Austins of Newton Abbot, who did all her makeup on the day.

‘Sharon from the makeup department was amazing, I only went in for some makeup advice because I thought I’d look horrendous after the shave, but they instead offered to do my makeup on the day!’

Support came from all over the town and beyond. From family, friends, shops, strangers and singing groups. ‘I’ve tried to thank everyone that supported me, but I can’t believe it. When I started, I put in a reserve of £300, because I thought if I don’t make it, I can put that much down myself. So to have got this much is just overwhelming.

‘A big thanks to everyone that donated, to my singing group, the Incon Singers, to Austins and all the local businesses.

‘But I need to give a huge thanks to Catherine Beacom and Heathman Hair for all the support they gave me throughout the whole day, offering the venue, the support, and donating to the draw, Catherine’s been amazing throughout.’
