MP Mel Stride has been on a fact-finding mission in Ashburton to discover how the town is coping without a bank.

And he headed straight for the post office, which now provides a range of banking services in the wake of Lloyds Bank’s departure last month.

Lloyds, which is aiming to establish a mobile banking service in the town in the near future, said popularity of online and mobile banking had sealed the branch’s fate.

Personal and business customers in Ashburton have the facility to pay in, withdraw cash and obtain a balance on their account at the St Lawrence Lane post office.
