FAMILY-FOCUSED arts and crafts workshops, nature trails and live theatrical performances will feature in the opening weekend of a three-week Dartmoor sculpture trail and open gardens event starting tomorrow.
The formal opening by Bill Hitchins, past chairman of Dartmoor National Park Authority, is set to take place at 11.30am at Heathercombe’s beautiful gardens near Manaton. The gardens, run by a charitable trust, featured last month on BBC1’s Countryfile Diaries, and will host the bi-annual Edge Sculpture Trail.
The pieces, by West Country artists and community groups, have been produced in a variety of materials including wood, ceramic, basket work and even rubber tyres. They will be displayed in settings such as woodland, a cottage garden, wildflower meadow and park, all amid the tranquility of Heathercombe with its streams, ponds, lake and medieval longhouses.
Smaller pieces will be on show in Heathercombe’s Wayside Gallery.
Trustee John Pike said: ‘On the opening weekend there will be family-focused activities including arts and crafts workshops, nature trails, performances from Med Theatre and face painting.
‘Cream teas and other refreshments will be available and we welcome dogs on leads.
‘There are more than two miles of sandy paths to follow and the entry fee for both the gardens and sculpture trail will be just £6 for adults, with children and concessions at £2.
‘Proceeds from the event will be shared with the National Gardens Scheme charities and Rowcroft Hospice so your money will be put to good use.’
Heathercombe near Manaton can be approached via Haytor/Houndtor. The sculpture trail and gardens will be open daily (except Mondays) 10am to 5.30pm until Sunday, July 10.
