A UNIQUE art group in the heart of Newton Abbot is transforming the way people connect, create, and collaborate.

Open to everyone, regardless of skill level, Highweek Art Group, offers a safe and supportive environment for people to explore their creative side.

Launched by artist Liz Walker, the group seeks to bring people together and foster a sense of belonging among participants, inspiring creativity in a welcoming, inclusive space.

‘I have been an art teacher for pretty much my whole career, but also as a practising artist’ Liz said.

‘I had to give up teaching as I have arthritis, so I could no longer do it full time.

‘But I carried on working in the community’ Liz added.

From children, secondary school pupils, specialist care groups and dementia patients, Liz has taught art, design and craft to learners of all abilities from age four to 104.

Liz led an art group in Coldingham, Scotland, for many years before relocating to Devon with her partner.

And since its inception around two years ago, Highweek Art Group has steadily gained both momentum and membership.

Each week members explore different kinds of drawing and painting techniques, often working to a loose theme.

The artwork that is produced becomes a part of a themed-gallery, uploaded to a dedicated ‘Sea Sparkle’ web-page.

‘It has grown really quickly - it has been so important for the people that come, they have formed attachments with one another’ Liz said

The group are hoping to hold an exhibition at the Highweek Inn in the summer, though an official date has yet to be decided upon.

‘The group offers a vital space for people to connect’ said group member Karen.

‘For me, it is more than about being creative - it is a lifeline for mental wellbeing

‘You can go there and be immersed in what you are doing, and not have to worry about the outside world for the two and half hours that you are there each week’ Karen added

• The community-based art group runs from 10am to 12.30pm every Thursday at Highweek Village Hall.
