The Tools for Towns initiative, delivered by Teignbridge Council, has helped another rural community 'get connected' by providing residents and visitors with computer and internet access. The new computer was installed last week in the Shaldon Over Sixties Club, as part of the Teignbridge Strategic Partnership's Tools for Towns project, which aims to provide public computers and internet access to those in rural communities who may not otherwise be able to travel to a public internet access point. With the help of funding from Leader+ Project, Shaldon can now take advantage of the new facilities. Shaldon is the latest in a series of communities to gain access to the world wide web under the scheme. Abbotskerswell, Manaton and Chudleigh were the first to go online, with residents of Manaton now being able to surf the net at the Kestor Inn, while in Abbotskerswell the post office is now offering more than traditional postal services. In Chudleigh there is a computer at the town hall offering various services to customers. Lynn McElheron, Teignbridge Council strategic manager, said:'We are delighted to be working in partnership with Leader+ to enable customers in rural communities to gain access to the internet; in addition to the opportunity to learn new computer skills. We hope Shaldon residents will be very happy with their new resource' The computer has proved a big hit at the club, who are planning to extend their opening times to enable computer learning on Friday mornings. Dave Postlethwaite, chairman of the Shaldon Over Sixties Club, said: 'Having a computer will be a great asset, bringing everyone up to speed and giving them the chance to use new technology. 'We are pleased to be able to offer computer services.' Graham Tobin, a club member, said: 'We are very grateful for the opportunity to use a computer in a friendly environment.'
