As the 2024 Olympics draw to a close this weekend it seems fitting to look back at some glass plate negatives we have from the 1948 Olympics - the year that the prestigious sporting event visited Devon.

Photographers from the South Devon Times and Mid Devon and Newton Times were among those invited to view sailing events for the press boats between August 3 and 12 of that year.

Tor Bay was chosen as the setting for yachting events that year, thanks to the fact that it was exposed to eastern winds which are rare sun the summer

Five classes including single-handled Fireflies, Swallows , Darts and Dragons and 6 Metres all all took place over the triangular type Olympic courses.

Despite the apparent home advantage, Britain won just one medal, a gold in the Swallows while the American team scooped up four medals in the five classes.
