A MAN is fighting for his life after being struck by a train on a pedestrian crossing on the main line near Starcross Railway Station.

Ambulance, fire and British Transport Police rushed to the scene just after 7.30am on Saurday morning (March 25th) following reports a male was seriously hurt after having been hit by a train travelling at around 75mph..

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “We can confirm that a male has been injured after being struck by a train in the area of Starcross Station on Saturday, March 25, 2017."

"The incident was reported to police at 7:37 am and is being treated as non-suspicious."

“Paramedics treated the casualty at the scene and he was conveyed to hospital."

Firecrews from Dawlish, Teignmouth , Topsham and Exeter were mobilised to the scene.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “ "Upon arrival of the first crews, the casualty was already in the hands of the ambulance, and all but the crew from Dawlish were returned to their stations.

"The crew assisted with scene safety and inspection of the train. The casualty, who had been struck by a large passenger train, was transferred to hospital by land ambulance."

The incident caused widespread disruption to the rail network with both Great Western Railway and Crosscountry services being suspended until around 9.30am.
