FIRE crews from Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Ivybridge, plus a rescue tender from Middlemoor, attended a serious road traffic collision that blocked the A38 near Buckfastleigh this morning (Friday).

They were responding to initial reports of a three vehicle collision just before 7.00am between Rattery and Lower Dean in which one vehicle had gone through the central reservation barriers onto the opposite carriageway.

On arriving at the scene crews found two vehicles on opposite sides of the carriageway and with one casualty medically trapped in one vehicle and one person free and clear from another vehicle but in a state of shock.

Thanks to the quick attendance of the Ashburton crew the officer in charge was able to quickly sectorise the incident and deal with both vehicles simultaneously.? Crews were aided at the scene by a Royal Navy paramedic who was caught up in the traffic and he provided excellent medical care until the arrival of the ambulance service.?The casualty was safely removed from the vehicle and taken to hospital by land ambulance Once the vehicles and scene had been made safe duty of care was left with the police.
