FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were called in to tackle a fire which broke out in a heap of dung.

Monday night’s blaze saw crews respond to a call when a heap of dung had burned out of control.

Crews attended the scene to suppress the fire and stop it spreading to trees and further vegetation.

Initially one crew from Newton Abbot attended but due to the location of the incident, a second crew from Newton Abbot attended to supply a further team wearing breathing apparatus to operate a water shuttle down the narrow lane which was too small for a water bowser.

Using forks and jets, crews worked, along with the land owner, using a mini digger turned over the manure to reveal the deep-seated combustion that if left would continue to burn for days even without exposure to the air.
