FIREFIGHTERS are dealing with a suspected leak of ‘hazardous materials’ outside a Newton Abbot School tonight, Monday.
Wolborough School and a section of Union Street have been cordoned off.
The incident commander at the scene was unable to confirm what the substance was but firefighters from Newton Abbot were placing sand and material on the road to contain the liquid prevent any leakage into the drains.
This was after a substance that was suspected to be hazardous was found to be leaking into the road outside the school.
Police were in attendance and are understood to have questioned someone at the scene.

They confirmed that a hazardous substance had leaked from a container and it was suspected the liquid was an oil-based thinner
A police spokesperson said there was a male who was suspected of 'trying to set fire to things' and he had a canister with possibly oil thinners
'This has leaked out and the firefighters are putting down sawdust and sand on top of that to contain it.'
He confirmed the road would be open again and safe in the morning in time for school.
He was unable to say if anyone had been arrested yet but confirmed that police were dealing with anther person who had been injured and an ambulance had been called.
Firefighters left the seen shortly before midnight and the road was opened and cleared.
