The Rotary Club of Totnes presented awards to those brave rafters who competed in the 10 mile raft race from Buckfastleigh to Totnes earlier in October, writes Sandra Perraton.

At a glittering ceremony at the Dart Totnes Amateur Rowing Clubhouse the fastest teams to complete the course in various categories, including those with all female crews, were awarded recognition for their tenacity in not only building their own rafts but also navigating them over many hazards along the River Dart.

Race director Keith Bull gave praise to the nearly 200 people involved in organising and keeping the event safe on the day.

Special thanks were given to those supporting clubs who helped to make the event supremely safe including the Totnes Sub-Aqua Club, Totnes Canoe Club, Dartmoor Search and Rescue (Ashburton), RAYNET and Devon Event Medical Services.

The event, involving 170 rafters, requires the support and agreement of numerous organisations including landowners besides the river, Buckfast Abbey, Dart Harbour Authority, the Environment Agency. Totnes Rotary was supported by other Bay Rotary clubs including Brixham, Dartmouth and Ashburton.

It was announced that Sunday, October 2, 2022 is the preferred date for the Totnes Raft Race 2022...Get building those rafts now!
