THIS week’s picture from the past is a photograph of the Kingsteignton Army Cadets in the late 1940s proudly showing off a trophy they had won, writes Steve Harris.
I don’t have the full details of the personnel in the picture but I know that the young lad standing on the far right is the late Maurice Chammings.
Maurice was a Kingsteignton boy born and bred. Both his parents were involved with the British Legion and his father was involved with the committee of the pre-Second World War Kingsteignton Athletic team, then regarded by many as the best amateur team in the county.
In his professional career with the MOD and the Property Services Agency (PSA), Maurice was to leave a mark on the world that will be of benefit to people at the other end of the world for years to come. His service with the Overseas Directorate of Works of the PSA saw him rise to regional director of an area of far flung territories which included places such as Ascension Island, Trista da Cunha and the Falkland Islands.
