THERE have been more than 1,000 sewage discharges across the South West in a span of just three days, a charity has said.

Tracking sewer overflow in real-time, marine conservation charity, Surfers Against Sewage has revealed that South West Water has let slip more than 1,000 sewage discharges between February 19 and February 21.

The charity, which has been campaigning for more than 30 years, has built an interactive map showing the overflows that have spilled since February 19, along with the total number and duration of discharges at each site.

A number of beaches in the South West are affected, including Dawlish Town and Teignmouth Holcombe.

Annual spill data from the Environment Agency will not be released until April 2026.

Typically, storm overflows occur when the sewage system risks being overwhelmed, so a water company release excess sewage into rivers and the sea to prevent water backing up into people's homes.
